Here is the exact reason that everyone hates the DMCA: Slashdot -- Adobe Still Ignores Elcomsoft-Discovered Holes. If you read the original posting about the vulnerability (bugtraq, vulnwatch, etc), you'll see that this has been an issue with Adobe PDF files since June of 2001, and that it's never been resolved. Just sue the person who published the vulnerabilities, and make the problem go away.

The person (Dmitry Sklyarov) who published the original vulnerabilities wrote a reader for the Adobe Book format that allows you to read any Adobe book and made it public. He was arrested in Las Vegas for this issue, and later let go. The DMCA issue is interesting, but to me what's more amazing is that the original issue could have been resolved a long time ago.
